Fleas are gross and they carry different diseases. They will carry tape worms, hemobartonella (a blood parasite), plague and other diseases to your pet and into your home. We didn't even mention the diseases ticks can carry. Ticks carry Lyme disease, viruses and can leave your pet anemic and tired. So how do we prevent them from coming into our nice warm house to feast upon us and our pets at PAH?
So what do we do?!?! We prevent because an infestation means at least 3 months of treatment to break up the life cycle and treating for the secondary diseases that come with them. This can become expensive and tiresome. Especially if you get this infestation every year as soon as spring arrives.
We recommend the treatment and prevention of fleas/ ticks by the use of various products. The ones that we love and use here at PAH (Prairie Animal Hospital) are Bravecto, Revolution and Trifexis. Why do we like them? Because they have been proven to work and work quickly. They are great with prevention and with treatment. They do double and sometimes triple duty. Which means they do at least 2-3 things that we love and keep your pet healthy.
*Bravecto kills fleas and prevents flea infestations. Bravecto Chew kills ticks (black-legged tick, American dog tick, and brown dog tick) for 12 weeks and also kills lone star ticks for 8 weeks. Bravecto Topical for Cats kills ticks (black-legged tick) for 12 weeks and American dog ticks for 8 weeks.
*Direct from the Bravecto website
* REVOLUTION® (selamectin) protects dogs against a variety of common internal and external parasites. REVOLUTION is the first FDA-approved, topically applied medication for dogs 6 weeks and older that prevents heartworm disease, kills adult fleas, prevents flea eggs from hatching, prevents and controls flea infestations, treats and controls ear mites, treats and controls sarcoptic mange, and controls American dog tick infestations
Be careful with cats!!!! There are a lot of products out there that say all natural flea prevention but you can't use it on cats. Sometimes (not all the time) it is labeled as "Do not use on cats". Unfortunately, it should be labeled "This product Kills cats". If Permethrin gets on your kitty there is a 40% chance that they will die. Instead of getting your flea prevention online (from China where it might be counterfeit) or from the high school kid at a national box store. Ask us what flea prevention you should use with your cat.
Signs of Permethrin Toxcity on your cat
If you see any of these signs after applying flea prevention please let us know. It IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY and your cat should be treated right away.
This is by far the best animal hospital I have ever seen. I have two cats and they have been to many vet's before I took them here. Everyone here is very nice, and one of my cats, who is very jumpy around new things, sat calmly during her exam and didn't try jumping on everything in the room.
The staff is super welcoming! Dr. Rachel is also very personable, which makes everything feel more comfortable.
Dr. Kuhn and the rest of the PAH team are absolutely astounding. Had to have my cairn terrier boarded for a couple days on very short notice and they took amazing care of her. Would recommend to anyone.
SO impressed. The doctor and staff went out of their way to make my big dog (who has social issues) feel comfortable. They were caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, and prompt. I couldn't ask for better. We have to drive a bit to get to the facility, but it is well worth it. HIGHLY recommend!!
